Unit 2 - Great Disasters

Whether natural or man-made, disasters have always been a tragic part of the reality of human existence. In this unit, students will learn about the destructive but also regenerative force of earthquakes. They will read about deadly epidemics of the past and realize that they may recur as a gruesome future possibility. Students will also be reminded that Mother Nature can hit very hard and very close to home, and that great danger lurks in the field of space exploration. Finally, for evaluation purposes, students will read a text about volcanoes, and more precisely, about the Mount St. Helens eruption of 1980.
